DESCRIPTION

Featured in the AD (Architectural Digest May 2025 - Art Deco Issue) this Art Deco dressing table was made in Burma in the early 1900s. The memsahibs who accompanied their husbands to the colonies often commissioned furniture, including tables, desks, almirahs which were not part of the local repertoire. As the Art Deco style swept across the world, many pieces with a mix of Burmese and Art Deco motifs were created. Teak which was plentiful was used extensively for both furniture and carvings. This particular piece, a dressing table, (a furniture piece which wasn’t in use in the East) would surely have been a bespoke piece. The three panels of mirrors are shaped to form a simplified floral petal motif. The penchant for local high stylization and carving of foliage is controlled and the floral motif streamlined to blend in with the Art Deco ethos. The three wooden curved petals on either side of the mirror and the curved wooden piece below the central mirror could very well have been inspired by the Art-Deco sun-burst motif, albeit a very softened version of the same. Oversized wooden knobs and a thick wooden carved ribbon with a repeating geometric pattern running below the knobs points to the abundant availability of Burmese teakwood. The teak used for its making is polished to a high level and gives off a soft glow. Made from solid wood, this dresser features seven drawers for ample storage—three on each side and one in the center. The mirror is adjustable, allowing you to capture every angle with ease.
